ChatGPT vs Claude:
which fits your work?
You need a useful result: a clearer email, a researched answer, or something you can actually share. Start with that job when choosing an AI assistant.
The quick answer
Put ChatGPT on your shortlist if you want to combine conversations with tools for images, files, data analysis and research. Put Claude on your shortlist if its Artifacts workspace for documents, designs and other reusable outputs suits the way you work. These are starting points, not exclusive capabilities or benchmark winners. Both have free options, web search and project features. Try the same real task in each before paying.
How we compared: this guide uses the official documentation linked below. It is an editorial decision guide, not a claim of hands-on testing, measured time savings or a ranked model benchmark. Features and limits depend on your plan, settings and availability.
What do you get with each?
| Your priority | ChatGPT | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday writing | Drafting, rewriting and summarizing, with Canvas for editing alongside a conversation.1 | Chat-based work plus editable document outputs through Artifacts.2 |
| Current information | Web search can return recent information and source links.3 | Web search can retrieve current information with citations.4 |
| Creative deliverables | Image creation and editing, file work and data visualization are documented tools.1 | Artifacts can contain documents, designs, slides and interactive tools; some templates require paid plans.2 |
| Ongoing projects | Projects keep related chats, files and instructions together.5 | Projects organize chats and supporting knowledge; the free plan has a project limit.6 |
| Start without paying | A free plan is available, with separate limits on tools such as uploads and image generation.7 | A free plan is available; the pricing page lists web search, file creation, code execution and Artifacts.8 |
Choose by the task you repeat
For a small business: list the work you do every week. If that includes customer emails, a spreadsheet and a social graphic, check whether one assistant handles all three comfortably on the plan you would use. A strong first answer matters less if you have to rebuild the result somewhere else.
For writing: give both the same audience, facts, length and tone. Compare how much editing you need before you would send the result. Smooth wording is only useful if the assistant preserves your actual meaning.
For research: explicitly enable web search and ask for sources. Open those sources yourself. Check whether a cited page supports the specific claim, and whether its date fits your question. A citation is a place to check, not a guarantee.
For reusable outputs: look at the editing and export workflow. ChatGPT documents Canvas as a workspace for writing and code; Claude documents Artifacts for outputs you can revisit, edit and share. Try the format you need instead of choosing from screenshots of someone else's project.1, 2
A 15-minute comparison you can run
This is a suggested exercise, not a test WHATIF has already performed. Use a short brief with no confidential customer information. Start a fresh conversation in each product and use the same prompt:
“Turn this brief into a customer email of no more than 120 words. Keep every price and deadline exactly as written. Use a direct, friendly tone. Do not invent a discount, guarantee or service. List anything you need me to clarify before the draft.”
Then ask both to revise the same sentence. Judge the results on four things:
- Accuracy: did the numbers, deadlines and conditions survive?
- Instruction-following: did it respect the word limit and avoid invented promises?
- Editing effort: what would you change before using the answer?
- Workflow: can you revise, reuse or export it in the way you need?
Repeat with a second task you actually do. Keep a note of which plan and features you used. If a free-tier limit interrupts the exercise, record that as a practical limitation, not proof that one assistant is less capable.
Should you pay for either?
Start free if you are still discovering your use case. At the time of review, OpenAI lists ChatGPT Plus at US$20 per month, and Claude lists Pro at US$20 when billed monthly. Claude also lists an annual subscription option. These are listed web prices; check the provider's checkout for your region, taxes and billing terms.8, 9
Consider upgrading when a specific limit or missing feature repeatedly blocks useful work. Check the current plan details first: a paid subscription does not mean every feature has unlimited use. Do not assume a chat subscription includes all API usage or every separate product.
Questions worth asking
Is Claude better than ChatGPT?
This guide does not establish an overall winner. Your task, the available model, enabled tools and the editing workflow all affect the result. Compare the output against your own brief.
Can both search the web?
Yes. Both providers document web search. Availability and limits depend on the product configuration and plan. Enable the feature when you need current information, then check the cited sources.3, 4
Do I need two paid subscriptions?
Only if each earns its place in your workflow. Try the free options first, identify what each adds, and pay for a specific need rather than a general promise of productivity.
