The quick answer

Canva is a useful starting point to explore for social content, presentations and other everyday business visuals. Consider Figma Design when you need to work through an interface and show how its screens connect. Figma’s broader suite also includes presentation and marketing tools. This guide compares these workflows rather than claiming either platform serves only one kind of design.

Method: based on the official documentation linked below, with WHATIF's editorial advice on choosing a workflow. We have not run a head-to-head benchmark or measured time savings. Features, plan limits and prices can change.

What are you trying to make?

For a small business making regular content

Start with the thing due this week: a flyer, a slide deck or a social post. In Canva, explore a template in that format and see how comfortably you can replace the copy, colors and images. Its Visual Suite is built around a broad set of visual formats.1

Judge the finished result at the size people will see it. Check whether the offer is legible on a phone, whether the important words stand out, and whether you can make the next version without rebuilding the whole design. A familiar editing process can matter more than a long feature list.

For a website or app interface

If the task is to explain how someone books, buys or signs in, draw the screens and the transitions between them. Figma Design documents interactive prototyping for exploring those flows.3 Ask the person reviewing the design to find the next action without your explanation.

If a developer will build the result, agree on what handoff means before choosing a plan. Figma's Dev Mode provides inspection, asset access and handoff features, but access depends on an eligible plan and seat.5 A prototype is useful for discussing behavior; it does not replace checking the finished site's real forms, payments or data handling.

Try a real brief before subscribing

Use this exercise to compare the relevant workflows. It is not a test WHATIF has performed:

  1. Name the deliverable. For example, a one-page service flyer, a six-slide introduction or a three-screen booking flow.
  2. Use the same content. Keep the words, imagery and intended audience consistent.
  3. Make one meaningful revision. Change the main offer, add a second version or update a shared visual element.
  4. Ask someone else to use it. Can they understand the message or follow the flow?
  5. Check the handoff. Confirm the export, sharing and editing options needed by the next person.

Record where you hit a plan limit and where you simply need more practice. Those are different reasons to pay. If the deliverable is a flyer, evaluate the flyer workflow; if it is an interface, evaluate the interactive flow.

What should you compare in a paid plan?

Write down the exact feature you need, the number of people editing and the required output format. Check current provider pricing, seat types, content access, sharing rules and billing periods. Avoid comparing one platform's individual plan with another's team plan as though they include the same access.

It can be reasonable to use different tools for marketing and product design. Start with the one that solves your immediate job, then add another only when you can explain the gap it fills.

Is Canva or Figma better for beginners?

Choose a small project and try the workflow you need. For a template-based flyer or presentation, Canva is a sensible place to explore. For learning interface layouts and clickable screen flows, try Figma Design. This is WHATIF's suggested starting point, not a measured learning-speed ranking.

Can you make presentations in both?

Yes. Canva documents presentation tools, and Figma offers Figma Slides. Compare editing, sharing and export requirements on the specific plan you would use.24
